Tesla has finally driven into the Indian market, marking a significant milestone in the country’s automotive landscape. After years of speculation, regulatory hurdles, and countless rumors, the world’s most talked-about electric vehicle manufacturer opened its very first showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2025. The flagship showroom is located in the prestigious Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a fitting address for a brand known for its blend of luxury, innovation, and cutting-edge technology.

At launch, Tesla is introducing its popular Model Y SUV to Indian consumers. This model has become a bestseller globally thanks to its combination of long-range capability, premium features, and impressive performance. The Model Y comes in two variants in India. The Rear-Wheel Drive version is priced at ₹59.89 lakh ex-showroom, while the Long-Range Rear-Wheel Drive variant costs ₹67.89 lakh ex-showroom. After factoring in registration charges, road tax, and insurance, the on-road price crosses ₹60 lakh for the base version and approaches ₹70 lakh for the higher-end model. These prices are significantly higher than what buyers in the United States pay, primarily due to India’s hefty import duties on fully built cars, which can reach up to 100%.

Despite the high price tag, the Model Y offers compelling specifications for Indian buyers seeking an electric SUV with top-tier performance. The standard variant provides a driving range of up to 500 kilometers on a single charge, while the Long-Range version stretches that distance to approximately 622 kilometers under ideal conditions. Acceleration is brisk, with the car capable of going from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in about 5.9 seconds for the Rear-Wheel Drive and slightly quicker at 5.6 seconds for the Long-Range version. The top speed is rated around 200 kilometers per hour, more than enough for India’s expressways.

Inside, the Model Y showcases Tesla’s distinctive minimalist design. The cabin is dominated by a large 15-inch central touchscreen that handles nearly all vehicle controls, from navigation to climate settings. Premium materials, wireless software updates, a panoramic glass roof, and advanced connectivity features are standard. Tesla is also offering its Full Self-Driving Capability package for an additional ₹6 lakh. However, Indian regulations currently require active driver supervision, so while the technology is advanced, it does not enable fully autonomous driving yet.

To address concerns about charging infrastructure, Tesla plans to build a network of Superchargers across major Indian cities. Initial installations will begin in Mumbai and Delhi, with eight high-speed chargers expected at each location within the next year. These chargers are capable of adding nearly 270 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes, reducing range anxiety for early adopters. While India’s public EV charging infrastructure is still in its early stages, Tesla’s plans could set a new benchmark and encourage other automakers to accelerate their efforts.

The choice of Mumbai for Tesla’s first showroom is strategic. The city has a high concentration of affluent buyers and technology enthusiasts who are more likely to be early adopters of premium electric vehicles. Tesla executives also see Mumbai as a showcase market that can generate visibility and aspirational value, paving the way for expansion into other metro cities. According to reports, Tesla is already scouting locations in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad for future showrooms and service centers.

Tesla’s arrival in India is expected to have a ripple effect on the broader automotive industry. Local manufacturers and global competitors will likely step up their investments in EVs, charging networks, and customer education. However, the high price point means Tesla will remain a niche player in the short term, targeting business leaders, celebrities, and technology-savvy consumers rather than the mass market.

Overall, the launch of Tesla’s Mumbai showroom marks the beginning of a new chapter for India’s electric mobility story. While challenges remain, including import costs and infrastructure development, Tesla’s presence could drive a broader shift in consumer attitudes and government policy.
